THE BRONZEVILLE FILM FESTIVAL
The Bronzeville Film Festival is being organized by Third World Press. Its mission is to showcase feature films, documentaries, animation, short films, sci-fi, horror, experimental, student work, micro-budget, trailers and so on that communicate the sophistication, significance and history of African-Americans. The theme for last year was “Real Color, Real Words: A Mosaic of African-American History and Film. The theme for 2010 is Another Century of Bronzeville Renaissance.
The festival promotes appreciation of film as an art form and provides a vehicle for education and entertainment while solidifying the base that nurtures and encourages emerging black filmmakers.
There has been great concern surrounding the depiction of AFRICAN-AMERICANS and Americans of various denominations in electronic media. Often these images are portrayed stereotypically in American hegemonic culture reflecting degradation, squalor, poverty, and drugs. The redeeming power is oftentimes ignored. The inspiration and uplifting spiritual values that exist are somehow overlooked. The festival will offer attendees quality films expanding their knowledge of cinema and enhancing their appreciation of the filmmaking process. Film professionals and the interested public will have the opportunity to gain industry knowledge through interaction within a festival environment.
